"What did you do 10 years ago?"

This posting is inspired by tonight's "Rush Hour" program at KisFM with their subject "what did you do 10 years ago?" by JC & Mimi.

Lots of people at different ages talked about what happened to them 10 years ago, part of them were high school students, college students or workers. Most of the people who lived in Jakarta 10 years ago at around my age or older could not forget what has happened to Jakarta with the riot.

So this was what happened to me 10 years ago, I was a second year university student then. Me and my friends got an assignment from our Basic Culture Class to go to a painting exhibition and write an essay about it. So we went to the National Museum (Museum Gajah) at the center of Jakarta for there was a painting exhibiton by a Philipine artist (if I'm not mistaken). After writing down some datas for our essay, we went home that afternoon, at that time we already heard of what had happened to the Trisakti students, but not the whole story yet.

I was living at Depok at that time so I passed Pasar Minggu, the road was a bit quiet than usual in that area as it is a market place. What I didn't know was by the time I reached home, I got to know that when I passed Pasar Minggu it was the last minutes that it was in a good condition, maybe around 15 - 30 minutes after I passed it, the place was burned down by the riot, including a hypermart in Pasar Minggu area too was burned down as well. I really think I'm still being under God's guard, care & love as
I passed the area when the riot has not started at all, if it has started I'm in the middle of it don't know if I'm still alive or not. I still can't imagine that those people who were in the riot was behind me for only 15-30 minutes away from me.

At the time my dad was stationed in Sumatra, it was only me, my mom, 2 maids and my late 2 dogs at the house. Although living in a real estate we all felt like we were living in a war zone of terror, kept on watching TV for news to know where the riot has reached, at night we would be sleeping in full clothes to be ready at all time, even a drop of needle would wake us up, every super market or market is closed, ration of food is only for what we have in the house.
My mom and me made a strategy if the worse thing would happened that if the riot go through the baricade made by the real estate and we scattered, we would have to meet at a randesvouz point and not fogetting to bring out our beloved dogs, everybody has a backpack to carry essential stuff for each other.

In our neighbourhood the man of the house would have to take turn to do the night watch, if there were no man in the house we would have to make coffee or anything for the men who were doing the night watch. If before the riot we don't really know our neighbour, at that time we all felt more closer than ever before.
It became more scary when we got to know that the riot has got to Depok, they burned and steal from a supermarket not far from our area, and among our neighbour talk that the riot is trying to get inside our real estate.

On May 15th or 16th my dad ordered me & mom to go to Sumatra, on the way to the airport we could still see big pots for plants as part of devider of the toll road was broken on the road and the toll road was still free. The road trip to airport itself is really scary as people are still hiding at their home or their safe place so it has an eary quietness.

Since those teribble days, what really affected me was if I heard a big demonstration, flood or anything like it the first thing in my head to do is buy ration of food at least instant noodle, biscuits and rice. As when those days comes, it's only you for yourselves and you never know how long it will be. I know it sounded really egoistic but it is what I've learned from the experience. It really was the worse thing that ever happened in Jakarta for me, I hope this will never happened again.
