Manado Trip Sept '07 - day 3...

Manado Day - 3

This day I succeed to wake up early, I'm still curious about the breakfast. Today I don't want to try the chicken porridge again, I took the "tinotuan" or "bubur manado", it's the local porridge where lots of vegetables are cooked with the porridge, and ate it with salted fish and "rica". Besides the salted fish, I added some peanuts to satisfy my curiosity. Turns out the "tinotuan" tasted good, but the peanuts are just the same as the one I had yesterday, so it was not because I woke up too late, they just meant to cook it that way

Today after breakfast my mom and I don't have time to walk around the hotel as yesterday, 'coz it's Sunday and we have to go to church. The church that we went is a church that my grandpa built,
it's not the same building as the one that he built, as it was moved to another place but still in the area of our family land in Pandu. I guess it's like a nostalgia for me, my mom & dad for going there, because I was baptized there with my other cousins.

Our plan for the day is going to Tondano, a place where my dad used to live in his elementary school days. I never went there, so it was quite exciting for me to go to places I've never been. At the church we met my cousin's son , so he went along with us for the trip and we pick up my others nieces nearby the church to go with us.
Before going to Tondano we went to Manado city first to pick up the Biapong / BaPao my dad ordered yesterday at a local shop in the market area, took some pictures there. The Biapong is one of the best I've ever tasted, known as Biapong Kawangkoan, it's well known there.

After the stop, we went to Tondano straight away, but turns out my cousin is not really accustomed with the area. Though we could still see the Lake Tondano, but from the other side, we are not in the area we wanted to be. All of us are hungry already, but still have to wait because my cousin and dad has to find the right road first. The Tondano area itself is beautiful, it's more of a mountainy area, so the weather is quite cool. There is a road that divides the rice paddi field and at the background are hills and mountain, it reminded me of my trip to Padang, for I saw an almost the same view there with Bukit Barisan as the backgroud. Took some pictures of this view too, but I'm sorry to say that I think the pics I took could not give a justified image of the real view itself.

Hooray... finally we got to the restaurant, with hungry stomach, mostly we order BBQ and deep fried gold fish (no... it's not the kind of gold fish we put in aquarium, these ones are usual to be eaten). I'm not sure weather it's due to our extreme hunger or it's really delicious, but all of us ate alot. I really love the fish eaten with "rica" (sambal) and kangkung fried with garlic and shrimp paste.
Finished eating, me, my nephew and nieces we walk around the place and took some pictures.

After lunch, we went straight back to Manado city again to buy some local gifts and snacks for families and friends back in Jakarta. A well known local gift from Manado is "kain kerawang' it can be made to shirt, dress, handkerchiefs, hand fan, I chose the hand fan. But now they also sellwhite hand fans made from Philippine (as the seller claimed).
Then we all got in the mood for "gohu" & ice red bean as the one we had yesterday, but sadly the place is closed on Sunday. One of the known fish product of Manado is "Roa" fish (smoked little swordfish) and "cakalang fufu" (smoked small tuna), so my mom felt we have to buy these. So we went to the fish market to buy "cakalang fufu" but the shop which sells "roa" is closed already. My cousin helped my mom choose the fish, his tips is not to buy "cakalang fufu" which is too shiny or too red, as this is an indication that the fish is colored or furnished with unhealthy products.

It's late already, we went back to the hotel "Santika-Tongkaina" and had dinner there. Really, my advice if you choose this hotel as your accommodation, the view is excellent but never eat in the hotel. Though the hotel is quite far from the city, try to find a place to eat. Tonight we have to start to pack our luggage, 'coz tomorrow afternoon we are leaving Manado far Jakarta.
