Manado Trip September '07 - day 2...

Manado Day - 2
I'm always a fan for trying hotel's breakfast, so I tried to woke up early for having it but didn't succeed, my mom and I got there at the time it almost closes for breakfast. To a disappointment the breakfast in the coffee shop is a disaster. I tried the most common breakfast in Indonesia, which should already have been a standard in hotels here, chicken porridge (bubur ayam) and a slice of bread accompanied with 2 slices of smoked beef.
The chicken porridge I added with peanuts and slices of deep fried shallots, but it's not crunchy at all, so for me it spoiled the whole taste. As for the bread is just ok and the smoked beef has the same fate as the peanuts and had gone tough. I tried to think all of the bad breakfast I'm having is because I was late and it's not fresh from the kitchen.
After the breakfast me & my mom explored the hotel and took some pictures.

Around noon, my cousin pick us up from the hotel to the family cemetery in an area called
Pandu to put some flowers on my grandparent's grave. Then dad's eldest brother and his family came to join us there. Afterwards we all gathered at my oldest cousin's house nearby the cemetery where the gathering for the celebration is held. Lots of my family came to the gathering, many of nephews and nieces I've never seen before. And the one that made me in shock and denial (made me scream inside "Good Lord! I'm OLD!!!) is that I'm called as an aunt to my niece who is already in the university in her 3rd semester, and I'm not even 30 yet!!!!

The food itself is very delicious, it's really hard to say no to. They have the usual red bean soup, pork sashlick (sate babi), tinorangsa (pork cooked in a local way), garoupa fishes cooked in sweet and sour sauce and another one just BBQ-ed with rica (chilies). The garoupa fish is the biggest garoupa I've ever seen and ate, almost the size of my arm for the length, it was really delicious. I think the food at the feast are the best meal we had for this trip. In the afternoon we are all in the mood for snacks, so some of the family went out to buy es kacang merah (red bean with chocolate & shredded ice) and gohu (a special local snack of young papaya with vinegar, bakasang/terasi/fermented shrimp paste and chili). It was soooo... delicious and a perfect combination for the afternoon snack.

While waiting for the afternoon snacks we went to explore some of our family land, which part of it some of my cousins made a business by trying to make a chili plantation and other type of plants in the future. For this visit we can already see some of the chili paddies which already grew, it's really fun seeing something like that. They explained to me how they made it work, and their expectation from it, I really wish for their success. After that we went to the other part of the land where it used to be the place my grandpa had built his first house.

After another round of food for dinner and lots of laughter from the children's stories we went back to hotel. I guess we all had a good time with the gathering, where we can all laugh, remembering the old days, have a good time, forget all the differences in all of us and just enjoy each other's company as family.
